Participants must:
 |
Be able to consent to participate in the study |
|
 |
Be 18 years of age or more |
|
 |
Have laboratory evidence of HIV infection |
|
 |
Have a CD4+ cell count less than or equal to 300 cells/mm3 or CD4 percent less than or equal to 15%, and a viral load above 5,000 copies/ml |
|
 |
Have taken anti-HIV medicines at least for the last three months |
|
 |
Not be pregnant or breast-feeding |
|
 |
Have experienced the failure of at least two different multi-drug regimens that included drugs of all three classes |
|
 |
Not have a serious, uncontrolled opportunistic infection (OI) within 14 days of screening |
|
 |
Not be currently taking any of the following medications: amiodarone, astemizole, terfenadine, cisapride, ergot derivatives, lovastatin, simvastatin, pimozide, propafenone, midazolam, triazolam, bepridil, clozapine, bupropion, rifampin, St. John's Wort or phenobarbital. |
