OPTIMA is a randomized, controlled, tri-national, 5.5 year, 504-person management study in people with HIV infection who have a CD4+ (also known as T4) cell count below 300/mm3 or a CD4 percent less than or equal to 15%, and a viral load above 5000 copies. The study compares different strategies for the management of patients who have failed first- and second-line highly active antiretroviral therapy.

The OPTIMA study recruited its first patient in 2001. As of January 15, 2006, 360 patients had been enrolled worldwide. Enrolment is scheduled to continue until June 30, 2006.
